The fast is observed from dawn to moonrise. People terminate fast after viewing the Moon, when Aarti is performed. Songs are also sung by people to welcome Ganapati at their places.
It is believed that one should not view the Moon on Chaturthi Tithi (date). If such an act is performed, the viewer is falsely accused of stealing something. This accusation is also known as Mithya Dosham.
The rituals and traditions remain the same as in other Masik Chaturthis, while the mood associated with this ten day festival is much more joyous.
The preparation for Ganesh Chaturthi begins months before the actual date. Idols of Ganapati are sculpted out of clay and the artistic brilliance in each idol differs from the other idols.
Ganesha idols are installed in Mandapas (temporary stage). The Mandapas are decorated with garlands, artistic decorations, etc.
It ends on Ananta Chaturdashi with Ganapati Visarjan, which is the fourteenth day of the waxing Moon phase. Ganapati Visarjan is celebrated with great enthusiasm where processions of common people light up the streets.
